Starting with EDI: one partner connection, one verifiable business process.

Connect orders, despatch advice and invoices with one trading partner, from message mapping to error handling.

A message belongs to a business transaction

GS1's EANCOM describes orders, despatch advice and invoices, among other messages. ORDERS, DESADV and INVOIC denote different message types. Their relationship is what matters: which order underlies a delivery, and which line item was actually delivered?

Review the trading partner's requirements with warehousing and order processing. A technically complete field list helps little if your own process never produces the references it requires.

Successful transmission is not complete processing

Distinguish sending, technical receipt and business acknowledgement. A transport service may have accepted a message while the retailer rejects an unknown item identifier. These states require different responses.

Test at least one partial quantity and one repeated message. If external references do not match, a retry must not create a second order. Unresolved cases need a visible work queue and a traceable way to resume processing.

Begin with one partner

A pilot covers one business partner and a few message types. Record the expected documents on both sides and compare quantities, dates and identifiers. A documented partner acceptance test is worth more than merely stating that the connection is up.

Partner profiles and ERP systems change in operation. Responsibilities, alert routes and maintenance scope should be named in the first project. This makes it possible to assess later which components are reusable for other trading partners and which need new mappings.
